Our Mural Problem

You are required to participate in a collaborative mural design and painting of an indoor mural with the dimension of 14.77 sq. meter in this course. The main theme of this mural will be about the cultural exchange between Bulgaria and the United States of America because this course is sponsored by the Fulbright US Scholar Program and Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission. At the same time, the mural site is located in the North (White) Building of National Academy of Art, so it is reasonable to include visual art as the one of major components in this mural design.

We will work as a team in searching for ideas related with Bulgarian and American culture and art, and participate in group discussion activities, including think-pair-share, brainstorming, role play, think-aloud pair, information generators, and blog journal. The premise for this mural painting project is mainly representational or figurative in opposite to total abstraction. However, the expression or style of this mural is open to explore which means it doesn't need to be just realistic or narrative but can be surrealistic, semi-abstract, or photo-realistic.

To positively contribute to our group discussions, we need to collect ideas, sketches, and digital images for our mural design. Using our selected sketches and images to compose them into an intriguing mural design with consideration of color contrast, textural interests, proportional and spatial relationship, and rhythmic movement. You will apply your understanding of art elements and design principles in constructing the final composition of this mural project. We will share our duties in preparing the digital mural design as well as the linear and color mural design layouts.

Once the final mural design is done, we will work on wall preparation, layout enlarging, underpainting, documentation, mural painting, varnishing together. You will apply your understanding of basic acrylic mural painting techniques of underpainting, glazing, modeling, blending, impasto, and scumbling in the mural painting production. You are encouraged to participate in class discussions and critique related to the mural design, production, and critique whether by asking questions or offering critical comments or responses to the discussion.
